"Every man is his own ancestor, and every man his own heir. He devises his own fortune, and he inherits his own past."
-- Francis Herbert Hedge

Whatever views we have in life, our past will always be our past. My family is a part of my past. And so, the time comes again for reminiscing something from long ago. Well, not so long ago… OUR FAMILY HISTORY. This is where I need my grandfather for details so as I arrived home, I sat down beside him and started asking all the questions that needed a lot of answers. Background was essential so I asked about his grandparents. It is unfortunate however that his memory lacks the info about them. Having been listening to the stories for a long time, I now have something to look back to as I remember my family.

It all started way back when Manuel Esguerra[aka my great grandfather] met a young lady[Leoteria Esguerra] who later became my grandpa’s mom. They met at some place noted as Caputatan before but now known as San Miguel. After that, they were blessed with seven children who all grew up to be great sons and daughters. One of them was my grandfather, Julian Esguerra, who lived up to be a farmer and a hardworking one at that. His other siblings also have businesses of their own and works to attend to.

My grandpa, along with 3 of his other siblings [Reymundo, Carolina, and Florentina], are presently well and living today.

One unforgettable thing about my grandfather is the fact that he is one of the most striving persons I know. It all leads to my conclusion that this was one of the reasons why my grandma didn’t have any hesitations in marrying him. It wasn’t hard for destiny to make their paths cross since they were both living in the same area, still in San Miguel. You can say that they were a blessed couple as well to have five children who always stayed by their side.

Having interviewed my mom on the phone earlier, This is where I know a lot. My uncles all had stable jobs as engineers and employees. However, there was this unfortunate accident that took one of their siblings, my uncle Eduardo, away from them too soon. Having no choice but to move on, they went on with their lives. Lucky for my mom, she met my father afterwards. It was a funny love story as I may say since my dad was one who refused to take risks. It was surprising that they were only talking about this and that in their offices [my dad is a client of my mom’s company.] and then suddenly he just proposed out of nowhere! My mom accepted him but after some years of waiting. She wasn’t in a rush to get married.

A lot of the stored info about my "ancestors" were probably erased because I live for the present for that is what I have now. And that’s how it is, the rest is history! So now, I’m here, together with my brother, of course! I hope our parents are indeed “blessed” to have us. The family histories I have come to know were not at all detailed. They were just brief glimpses of the past. Looking at the past isn’t so bad after all. Hey, who knows, you might be in someone else’s family tree when the future comes. Ü
